Michael Exall (1950–1996), painter, printmaker, draughtsman and teacher, born in Norwich, Norfolk. Attended Hornsey College of Art, 1968–72, under Norman Stevens, and Royal Academy Schools for postgraduate studies, 1972–5. Anthony Gross and Giorgio Morandi were influences. From 1976 Exall taught part-time at Manchester Polytechnic and University, providing him time and money for his own work. Group exhibitions included Bradford International Print Biennale from 1976, the year he showed in British Realists at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham; Hull Print Exhibitions from 1984; and RA Summer Exhibitions. Had a solo show at Trinity College, Oxford, 1974; Angela Flowers Gallery and City Art Gallery in Barnsley, both 1986; Dean Clough, Halifax, 1990; and Salford Art Gallery, 1991. Public galleries in Leeds, Norwich, Sheffield and Wakefield hold examples, as does Skopje Museum in former Yugoslavia. Lived in Todmorden, Lancashire.
