These medals were presented to important individuals involved in Shanghai at the time of the jubilee and in recent years have seen a massive rise in popularity owing to their connection to prominent individuals involved in the history of China. As they were intented for wearing, they are often found in worn condition or with various marks and edge knocks. This example is the joint finest graded and is a full point higher than the MS63 example sold by Stacks Bowers Galleries in May 2022 for a hammer price of US$24,000.
Douglas Jones was clearly a prominent member of Shanghai hunting and sporting society as he is mentioned within Henling Thomas Wade's 'With Boat and Gun in the Yangtze River' multiple times, including a hunting trip alongside James Jardine Bell-Irving (of the famous Jardine Matheson & Co family). He was also presented with a personalised inscribed copy of 'The Sportsman's Diary for Shooting Trips in Northern China' by the author, Francis Groom.
