A matching pair of medals to include the full size version and the associated miniature. The official issue to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897, issued to members of the Royal household, government ministers and senior officials. From an issue of 3,040 medals.
Both medals Good Extremely Fine and attractively toned. The full sized medal is missing the rivet which keeps the pin in place (this can be quite easily replaced) and the minautre is missing the suspension pin. The large medal is housed in fitted Wyon case. Accompanied by a handwritten note which reads 'Jubilee Medal, Belonged to the late G.J Munro, R.M.L.I'.
Gustavus Francis Munro (19/10/1834 - 19/03/1908), the son of Sir Charles Munro, XXVII of Foulis, 9th Baronet, joined the Royal Marines as Second Lieutenant, at Woolwich, on the 19th of April, 1854, and subsequently served at several stations at home and abroad. He attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on the 13th of April, 1882, while serving at the Cape of Good Hope, and as Colonel was appointed to the command of the Royal Marine Depot at Walmer, from whence he was promoted to be Colonel-Commandant of the Chatham Division of the Royal Marines. On the 21st of March, 1889, he attained the rank of Major-General. He married on the 8th of August, 1865, Edith Thomasina, only daughter of the late John William Hampton.
