88mm. Bronze. 247.88g. By C. Browne.

Obverse with bust of Marks, reverse with two naked cherubs holding tablet inscribed 'I am but a gatherer and disposer of other men’s stuffe'.

Extremely Fine and housed in fitted, embossed case of issue. Extremely rare with a mintage of just 25 medals.

The exterior of this case is embossed M.M to H.J.P. which is thought to mean Murray Marks to Henry Joseph Pfungst. Pfungst (1844-1917) collected Italian and Japanese bronzes, and Italian and Persian faience, as well as drawings. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He owned nearly 80 Gainsborough drawings and created a fine collection of his prints which he presented in 1913 to the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett. He was a frequent donor to several different departments in the British Museum between 1889 and 1914. The remainder of his collection was sold at Christie's, 15th June 1917.

An example of this medal (lesser grade and without case) realised a hammer price of £480 in a DNW auction dated 24/03/2016 (lot 1406).
