Obverse with bust of James Ludovic Lindsay, the 26th Earl of Crawford, reverse with 5 line decorative legend. Edge engraved 'Mr G.S. Ryan For His Book Entitled 'The Cancellations of Hungarian Post Offices on The First Issue of Hungary 1867-71'. Hallmarked to edge.

The medal awarded annually from 1920 for a contribution to philately published in book form.

Small patch of metal test to edge otherwise Good Extremely Fine and toned. Housed in fitted case of issue.

Gary Sidney Ryan (1916–2007) was an eminent philatelist who specialised in the stamps and postal history of Hungary and later in revenue stamps. He was awarded the Crawford Medal of the Royal Philatelic Society London in 1988 for his work on the cancellations of Hungarian Post Offices on the first stamps of Hungary and he signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1980. After his death, Ryan's collection was auctioned by Christies.
