Medallic Illustrations Volume 1, p.422

35mm x 31mm. Silver. 19.54g. An 18th Century imitation of an earlier 17th Century medal, likely by Stuart.

Obverse with bust of James Ash, Member of Parliament for Bath. Reverse plain.

Extremely Fine, likely much as made, and nicely toned. Housed in contemporary case of issue. Extremely rare.

MI states that a similar example of this medal is housed in The British Museum and is also not an 'original'. There is also in the Museum however, a similar medal that is original, that uses the same bust and a similar legend, but is named to James Pasch, and features a reverse design. It is therefore suggested that Stuart copied that original medal and altered it slightly to 'produce' this medal of James Ash, who was MP for Bath in both 1640 and again in 1656.
