He notably was in command of the SS Montreal when it ran aground near Quebec on August 15th 1889. Regarding his invention, the Montreal Herald and Daily Commercial Gazette, Sept 16th, 1884, reads “Captain Joseph Wall, of the Dominion Line, has invented and is now endeavouring to introduce a system of night signals, to supplement the commercial code of flag signals now in use at sea. His apparatus consists of three lamps fixed in the same plane upon a moveable stand, so that while always maintaining uniform difference apart of twenty-four inches, they may be turned in any direction. Each lamp is provided with a revolving screen carrying four screens, red, green, white and a dark slide. In use the centre light is to be focused upon the vessel it is desired to signal, and the different signals are formed by varying the lights. For example, white, dark, white being yes,” green, dark, green being “no,” red, green and red being P., and so on. Each lamp is to be provided with a round dioptric lense, of five inches in diameter, with a centre and two rings, a spherical reflector and a one-half inch duplex burner, which would, the inventor claims, make the signals distinguishable at a distance of one mile by the naked eye and at two miles distance they could be distinguished by a glass.”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2437/4545/files/STA_0106_a31e3ef6-c0f6-4040-9d4a-e199c255fb2f.png?v=1787316388
https://www.cooperscoins.com/products/c-1886-mercantile-marine-service-association-38mm-silver-medal-by-elkington
