Reverse with heads of the Pope and Devil joined to from one face within legend of 'Ecclesia Perversa Tenet Faciem Diabolil'. The obverse has similarly combined heads of a Cardinal and a Fool, within the legend 'Stulti Aliquando Sapientes'.
A satirical medal created to mark the Council of Trent (1545-1563) held in Northern Italy. Prompted by the Protestant Reformation, it has been described as the embodiment of the Counter Reformation.
Very Fine and a really rather wonderful medal. Rare.
