58mm. Gilt bronze. 108.67g. By Gorham.

Awarded by The American Museum of Safety, to Elmer A. Sperry 'For notable achievement in devices for security of life in aerial and marine navigation.

The edge of this substantial medal appears to show a very thin seam running around it, suggesting that this is probably a bronze copy of the medal, likely also given to Sperry at the time of the awarding of a real gold medal. This was common practice with such valuable medals, so that the recipient could showcase the second, less valuable medal, whilst keeping the gold example safe.

Extremely Fine with some friction to the high points and housed in fitted contemporary case.

Elmer Ambrose Sperry Sr. (October 12, 1860 – June 16, 1930) was an American inventor and entrepreneur, most famous for construction, two years after Hermann Anschütz-Kaempfe, of the gyrocompass and as founder of the Sperry Gyroscope Company. He was known as the "father of modern navigation technology".
